The marriage vow, “till the death apart” have a new meaning today, very different from the time it was coined thousands of years ago. The new marriage is of greater articulation and sharing. The urban Indian women are gradually emerging as a new movers and shakers to become a key share holder in the ancient traditional institute of marriage. As her thinking and perception have evolved with the globalization so have her needs and desires to paint her life and call it her own.
Social scientists believe that a lot has changed form traditional marriages, where men were the breadwinners and women were keepers of the hearth, home and children. What began in schools, with both young boys and girls given similar education and equal opportunities to pursue has metaphorised into a social revolution of women flooding the workplace, holding jobs, dreams and ambitions, once belonged only to man. No longer governed by the codes of joint family, nuclear families have become the trendsetters to show the Indians how life is to be lived.
A forerunner portraying the changed social dynamics, advertisements and television soaps have entered every home across India. Prime time television soaps show greater equality in relationships between man and woman, sexual freedom etc. Ironically recent phenomena’s has been accepted and digested by all. Parents and young’s debate over such issues openly in homes and such topics are not taboo anymore. This has brought greater social acceptance to relationships outside marriage and its increasing possibilities day by day.
While there is a definite rise in cases of fidelity among men and women, proving adultery is a very difficult indeed. Suspicious and allegations alone without positive proof are difficult bets. What we are witnessing is that urban working women do not bother about the economics of alimony and maintenance of children and want to get out of a marriage when they decide not to remain in. Another reason for divorces is the sexual incompatibility and there is a no age bracket for this reason.
In the world of multiple attractions, there are possibilities of extra martial affairs. The probability of people having extra martial affairs has increased not just at workplace but because of greater social interactions between men and women. Titles have changed form mistress to girlfriend. As women come into their own, their demand and expectations from marriage and relations have increased with decreased commitments.
