Drug addiction is one of the biggest evils of the modem world. It is the most critical problem faced by humanity today. It is bringing disaster for so many young men and women all over the world. People in all parts of the world have been using drugs in one form or the other. In the past people consumed intoxicants on some happy or festive occasion only. But what started as a way of occasional marry-making has assumed alarming proportions. All the countries, rich or poor, are threatened by this menace.
If taken in small quantities, the intoxicants have a certain exhilarating effect on the mind. By making nervous system temporarily insensitive, a man may feel some joy. In the beginning people take intoxicants in order to experience the so called elated feeling. But soon, the desire to have such experience again and again becomes strong. As the frequency of these experiences increases, the body becomes habitual of consuming drugs and the person concerned becomes a drug addict. These drug addicts believe the intoxicating drugs to be the saviours of their lives. But they are sadly mistaken. These drugs are the killers of human conscience, physical strength, peace of mind and even character. Drugs such as heroin, opium, smack, cocaine, morphine and brown sugar are all very dangerous and deadly.
The menace of drug addiction is spreading in India also. A large number of our young men and women have taken to intoxicants. In general usage, a drug means a medicine which takes away feeling and causes sleep. However, the drugs available today reduce one to a total mindless state and incapacitate the drug addict in a short period of time. Addiction to drugs has four characteristics - an uncontrolled desire for the drug; and increased tolerance of the body to the intake of the drug; psychological and physical dependence on the drug; and harmful act on the drug addict in particular and the society in general. Drugs are mainly derivatives of opium and other narcotics or intoxicants.
There are a number of reasons for drug addiction. In the modern times, life has become highly competitive and fast. Many people become tense and depressed and try to escape from reality. For this purpose they turn to drugs. Once a person becomes a drug addict, his character also declines. The dangers of drug abuse are enormous. The influence .of drugs' kills the desire to do anything constructive and the victim loses interest in everything. It is the duty of the government, the society, the family, the parents and the individual himself to make secure efforts to check this spreading menace. Most of the drug addicts are those who do not have a safe and stable family environment. So the first duty of parents is to provide their children with a loving, secure and stable home environment. Lack of love is the preparatory ground for turning to drugs. It is the duty of the teachers and the society to educate the young persons about the evils of drug addiction. We must realize that drug addiction is a monster and we must put in Herculean efforts to destroy it.
