Sex education is a highly polemic topic in India. The pros and cons of introducing sex education in school and colleges have been hotly debated. Some persons wish that in order to enlighten youngster about this vital aspect of life, sex education should be introduced in the educational institutions. On the other hand, a majority of people vehemently oppose such an idea. .

Although sex and sexual education are very important subjects, yet they are also the most misunderstood topics. Generally people-do not approaches the topic of sex with an open mind. Generally sex education is considered a taboo. That is why a number of wrong notions about sex are prevalent among young boys and girls.

Sex education in schools and colleges should not be a taboo. Sex is as important a part of life as air and water. This universe-whether it is human life, animal, life or plant life-is based on the principle of sex. Propagation is vital for continuance of life. So, there is nothing improper about having knowledge of role of sex in our daily life. A young man with an adequate knowledge of sex will develop a healthy attitude towards life.

Indian society is not as permissive as the western societies. Religion and religious preachings have played a vital role in our life. Because of the influence of religion, any frank talk about sex was considered harmful and profane. Many baseless prejudices still exist about sex. Our elders feel that any open discussion about sex would lead to delinquency and sex crimes.

But we must not forget that anything which is kept secret incites more curiosity. If any talk about sex is kept a secret or discussed in hushed tones, it plants superstitious fears in the minds of children. Children are by nature inquisitive. They want to enquire about all those matters which concern the day to day existence. If information is not available to them from one source, they will seek it from another, however unreliable it may be.

Therefore we must liberalise our attitude towards sex education. We must rid our minds of old and baseless prejudices. Our films and other programmes on the television are becoming more and more frank. Naturally they raise many questions in the minds of the youngsters. So they must be imparted sex education so that their minds do not harbour any half-baked facts or myths about sex. Children should be taught how and why sex is an important part of life. The mystery of reproduction in nature should be explained to them in clear terms. This kind of education will give them a healthy growth of mind. This will also teach them about the hazards of unnatural sex. .

However, we must take great care in the matter of imparting sex education to young students. Needless to say, this is a very delicate and important matter. If left in the hands of incompetent and mischievous persons, sex education can do more harm than good. The matter of sex education should be entrusted to such teachers only as possess the requisite knowledge of child psychology and can impart this education to them without inciting unnatural desires in them. These teachers should have a desirable personality and outlook. They must be able to discuss the matters of sex with children in a frank and free manner and with patience.

Thus, in the modem world, sex education is the need of the hour. We should accept the idea of education and provide facilities for children to acquire such knowledge.
