Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati seems completely unfazed about all the opposition and criticism she is drawing for her love affair with statues of Dr Ambedkar, elephant and herself. Its very ironical to know that Mayawati's government allocated only Rs 325 crors for development of Bundelkhand whereas her park and statue drive costed the state exchequer Rs 553 crores. One possible motive could be to give the dalit people icons in form of Dr Ambedkar and Mayawati herself, towards whom they can look up to and get inspiration. The very fact that dalits have been oppressed in the past may be the reason for it. But Mayawati should try and understand that statues merely won't lead to their upliftment, rather she should concentrate on welfare schemes and make them self sufficient.

Mayawati had a golden opportunity of becoming a statesman had she managed the Bundelkhand issue with some wisdom, but she was preoccupied with parks. Mayawati came to power in the backdrop of negligent governance of Mulayam Singh Yadav which she is now carrying forward. Bundelkand has been facing draught since last 5 years and its geographical conditions make it unsuitable for irrigation by means of canals. There are three mountain ranges, beyond these ranges isolated hills rise abruptly and have steep inaccessible slopes. The problem is further complicated by the fact that depression of channels and height of river banks make them unsuitable for irrigation for the most part and hence it is conducted by means of ponds and tanks which get their water primarily from rain. They need immediate attention in form of relief package and assistance in charting future course of action such as choosing alternative crops.

The attempt by centre to create a development authority is also not acceptable to her. At the moment "Sarvjan Hitay Sarvjan Sukhay" seems more like "Sarvjan Satay Sarvjan Dukhay"
